Autonomous parcel lockers with IoT SIM cards: reliable connectivity and complete independence
Autonomous parcel terminals are automatic parcel terminals (parcel lockers) that are installed for the delivery and dispatch of parcels without the involvement of employees. Their key feature is complete autonomy: such parcel terminals can operate without being connected to the power grid or wired internet. Power is often provided by batteries (sometimes with solar panels), and communication is implemented via an IoT SIM card. Wireless connectivity eliminates the need for cables and the internet – a parcel locker can be quickly installed almost anywhere, which is convenient for covering small towns, rural areas, or new locations in large cities. Such solutions are already in use around the world, allowing the postal machine network to be deployed as quickly and economically as possible.
Why is an IoT SIM card critical for a parcel locker? Because the entire logic of parcel service depends on online connectivity. When a courier places a parcel in a locker or a customer comes to pick up a shipment, the system must immediately transmit the data to the server: which locker is open, by whom, and at what time. Recipient authorization usually takes place via a mobile app or an SMS code, and verification of this code is also an online process. If there is no connection, the customer will not be able to open their locker, and the operator will not know the status of the parcel. Therefore, a reliable mobile connection with virtually 100% uptime is a prerequisite for a stand-alone parcel locker. Using an IoT SIM card provides exactly that: with properly configured equipment, almost continuous network availability is achieved.
