Electric scooters

Introduction

Electric scooters in sharing services are equipped with IoT modules with SIM cards for continuous data transmission. This allows operators and users to track important parameters in real time via an IoT platform (e.g., 24na7.net):

  • the location of each scooter,
  • its battery charge level,
  • the status of the lock,
  • and other indicators.

Thanks to the support of all three Ukrainian mobile operators on our IoT SIM card, the scooter always stays connected. It transmits GPS coordinates, data on distance traveled, route and time of each trip, battery level, etc., and also receives commands to remotely lock or unlock the lock via a mobile app.

Without a stable connection, such a system simply would not work effectively: the user would not be able to find the nearest electric scooter through the app, and the operator would lose control over the device, failing to ensure its safety and timely maintenance.

Practical example of implementation

One of Ukraine’s e-scooter sharing operators has connected more than 5,000 scooters to our IoT platform. The result is an 80% reduction in fleet downtime thanks to continuous monitoring of device status.

The management platform receives data on which scooters are currently in use, which ones have been idle for a long time, and where they are located geographically. Based on this information, the company optimizes the distribution of the fleet: for example, it moves an unused scooter to a busier location to increase its utilization.

Users also benefit—they can quickly find the nearest available electric scooter and reserve it via their smartphone, instead of wasting time searching for one. All trip data (duration, distance) and payment information is automatically sent from the device to the server, which speeds up calculations and makes the process completely contactless.

Key benefits of IoT SIM cards for electric scooters

  • Stable coverage throughout Ukraine: Our IoT SIM card supports all three Ukrainian mobile operators, allowing the scooter to remain online even if one operator experiences interruptions. The SIM card automatically switches to the network with the best coverage in the current location, avoiding “dead zones.” This is especially important for scooters that travel throughout the city and may encounter areas with varying signal strength.
  • Tracking and security: Continuous GPS tracking via IoT SIM helps to quickly locate a lost or stolen electric scooter. The operator always knows where the e-scooter is and can effectively manage the entire fleet of devices. This increases the overall security of the fleet and reduces the risk of theft or unauthorized use.
  • Remote device control: IoT SIM provides remote control of the scooter. The operator can send a command to turn off the motor or lock the device via SMS or through the 24na7.net platform API if the device needs to be deactivated urgently (for example, in case of a violation of the rules or suspected theft). Firmware and configuration updates are also performed remotely — all this is possible thanks to a stable Internet connection in the device.
  • Status monitoring and maintenance: The scooter transmits telemetry (battery level, technical sensor data, etc.) via the cellular network, which allows you to plan maintenance in advance. For example, you can send staff to replace or recharge the battery in time, without waiting for the scooter to run out of power. As a result, the operational efficiency of fleet management is increased and downtime is reduced: scooters are less likely to be unavailable to customers due to dead batteries or breakdowns, as the service team acts proactively.

Ready to connect your fleet of electric scooters

The use of IoT SIM cards makes the electric scooter rental system truly smart and reliable. The operator has complete control over each device 24/7, even if the scooter is on the other side of town or in another country. Customers get the most convenient service possible: quick search for the nearest scooter, instant trip activation, smooth lock operation, and automated payment. At the same time, IoT connectivity remains stable and secure thanks to special M2M SIM cards with managed connectivity and traffic protection. All these factors together make modern electric vehicle sharing services a success.
